Theatrical Design (Ages 13-17)

September 10-October 29

Sundays 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Participants’ final project can be to create a complete design presentation for a design area of either Eurydice or The Matchmaker. These might be a poster board or a PowerPoint with their drawings/designs together. 

WEEK 1- Introductions, what is theater design, examples, going over all areas and what each do. (Kahoots, drawing games, and examples)

WEEK 2- Scenic and Props design basics, 

WEEK 3- Costumes design 

WEEK 4 Sound and Lights design 

WEEK 5 -Reading the 2 plays together, analyzing script and looking at examples, starting sketching ideas

WEEK 6- starting the design process, sketches, ideas, design collaboration 

WEEK 7 - finalizing designs, how to present designs to directors, what you can do with these designs 

WEEK 8 -finishing touches, parent/gaurdian showcase, presentations (if the students want to present)

 

About the instructor: Liv Kunkle is a professional Theatrical Costumer and Art Teacher. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theater Design and Technology from Oakland University and currently resides in Royal Oak, Michigan. She has received numerous awards for her work in theatrical design including the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festivals R.E.D (representation, diversity and equity) in design award  and the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festivals S.P.A.M award for excellence in prop design and construction. Her work has been showcased across the country in places like the  Sheen Center in NYC and the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Liv has also received praise for her international design credits including her costume design for The Trojan Women which opened in Greece and her costume designs for Eisenhower dance company and their summer 2023 Berlin Tour. 

When she is not working she enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons with her friends or spending time reading mystery novels with her cat Maverick. She is so excited to be teaching Design at Ann Arbor Civic Theatre.
